Code, Database & Server Optimisation
Some performance problems cannot be solved by changing the hosting plan or adding another caching layer. The underlying issue may be an inefficient database query, application code that performs unnecessary work or server configuration that does not suit the workload.
We investigate performance across the stack, looking at application code, database queries, server configuration, APIs and background processes to understand where time and resources are actually being used.
This can include query profiling, database optimisation, identifying N+1 queries, code review, PHP or Node.js configuration, caching at the appropriate level and server resource analysis. The aim is to address the underlying bottlenecks rather than masking them with additional infrastructure.

Make Your Website Work More Efficiently
Performance problems are often connected across several parts of a website or application. A slow database query can increase server response time. Inefficient application code can trigger the same query repeatedly. Poorly configured server resources can then make an otherwise efficient application perform badly under load.
We analyse these layers together to understand where the bottleneck is actually occurring. Depending on the platform, this can involve database query analysis, application profiling, code optimisation, server configuration and resource usage.
For WordPress and PHP applications, we can investigate database queries, plugins, PHP processing, scheduled tasks and hosting configuration. For custom applications, the same approach can be applied to backend code, APIs, databases and application infrastructure. The work is based on measurable performance data rather than assumptions about what is causing the slowdown.

What Our Code, Database & Server Optimisation Service Covers
We look at performance across the stack because problems at one layer can often be caused or amplified by another.
- Database query optimisation: Profiling slow queries, reviewing indexes and improving inefficient database operations where required.
- N+1 query investigation: Identifying code that repeatedly queries the database unnecessarily and restructuring the process where appropriate.
- Application code review: Investigating inefficient processing, unnecessary operations and performance patterns that become problematic as an application grows.
- Server configuration: Reviewing PHP, Node.js or other runtime configuration, resource allocation, caching and related infrastructure.
- Resource and load analysis: Looking at CPU, memory, PHP workers, database usage and other resources to identify where the server is becoming constrained.
- Background processes and APIs: Investigating scheduled tasks, queues, external API requests and integrations that may be contributing to slow responses.
Why We Optimise the Stack Together
Performance problems rarely exist in isolation.
A database query may be inefficient, but the bigger problem may be that the application runs it dozens of times for a single page. An efficient query can still perform poorly if the database server is under heavy resource pressure or the application is creating too many concurrent connections. Looking at only one layer can therefore produce a partial improvement while leaving the main bottleneck untouched.
We profile the database, review the application code and assess the server environment together where required. This gives us a clearer picture of how the different parts of the system are affecting one another and where optimisation work is likely to make the most difference.

- Code reviewed for performance bottlenecks and inefficient processing.
- Server and runtime configuration reviewed against the application's workload.
- Resource usage and infrastructure bottlenecks identified.
- Background processes and third-party API calls investigated where relevant.
- Changes tested before being introduced to the live environment.
- Before-and-after measurements where meaningful performance data is available.
The Business Problems This Solves
A website can become progressively slower as its database grows, functionality is added, and more integrations are introduced.
Inefficient queries can consume increasing amounts of database resources. Application code can accumulate processing that was not a problem when the website was smaller. Background tasks and third party services can also consume resources or introduce delays that are difficult to identify from the frontend alone.
Simply increasing server resources may provide temporary relief, but it does not necessarily address the reason the application is using those resources in the first place.
We investigate the underlying technical causes so improvements can be made where the actual bottleneck exists.
If your website is slow and you're unsure whether the problem is in the database, application code or server environment, we can investigate the full stack.

THE BUSINESS CASE
Why Deep Optimisation Matters
Performance optimisation is not just about making a homepage load faster. The underlying efficiency of the application affects how the platform behaves as content, users, transactions and functionality increase.

Faster Server Responses
Reducing unnecessary database work and application processing can improve the time required to generate responses, particularly on dynamic pages that cannot rely entirely on cached content.
More Efficient Resource Usage
Optimised queries and application processes can reduce unnecessary CPU, memory and database activity, helping the infrastructure spend resources on useful work.
Better Performance Under Load
A platform that is already consuming excessive resources can become increasingly difficult to manage as traffic and usage increase. Addressing inefficient processing can help create more capacity within the existing architecture.
A Better Technical Foundation
Code and database improvements address the underlying implementation rather than relying solely on additional caching or larger infrastructure. This can also make future development easier to manage.

FAQ
Your Code, Database & Server Optimisation Questions Answered
These are some of the questions we commonly hear from businesses dealing with backend performance problems.
A database query is a request for information from the database. Some queries can take significantly longer than others because of the way they are structured, the amount of data being searched, or the indexes available.
We can profile database activity to identify slow queries and determine whether they can be improved through query changes, indexing, data structure changes or other technical approaches.
An N+1 problem occurs when an application first retrieves a list of records and then performs another database query for each individual record.
For example, retrieving 100 products and then running another query for each product can create a large number of unnecessary database operations. Where this pattern is identified, we can restructure the application to retrieve the required information more efficiently.
Any changes to application code, databases or server configuration can introduce risks if they are not tested properly.
Where possible, we make and test changes in a controlled environment before deploying them to the live website. We also consider existing functionality and compare relevant performance measurements before and after the work.
Caching can be very effective, but it does not remove every performance problem.
Dynamic pages, logged-in areas, search results, checkout processes, API requests and other uncached operations may still depend on database and application performance. If the underlying code or database is inefficient, optimisation at that level can still be worthwhile.
The timeline depends on the size of the application and the problems identified during the assessment.
Some issues can be addressed relatively quickly, while larger applications may require database work, code changes, infrastructure changes and more extensive testing. We provide a clearer estimate once the current system and performance problems have been reviewed.
Yes. We can investigate the application and database independently of the hosting provider and review the server configuration where access is available.
If changes need to be made by the hosting company, we can also provide technical recommendations or work with the provider as part of the optimisation process.
Not necessarily. Additional resources can help in some situations, but the first step should usually be understanding why the existing system is using its current resources.
If inefficient queries, application code or configuration are creating the bottleneck, addressing those issues may be more appropriate than simply moving to a larger hosting plan.
